I just finished watching ‘Like Crazy’ and i just had a whole load of emotions, thoughts and memories running through my mind, to a point where it’s flooding the space up there and i just have to say something.
Director’s comments below.
“Is Jacob and Anna’s relationship true love, or is it an addiction that neither can quite shake?
For them, the relationship becomes like trying to come back to a moment that existed, that’s in the past, and that doesn’t exist anymore. It’s that first three or four months that you cling to, or want to relive over and over again, like a drug. That’s the saddest thing of all, because while you’re in it, you can’t tell yourself that it’s not real, or that it doesn’t exist anymore. I feel like it’s two things, to be concise: One, it’s Jacob and Anna trying to get back to that moment, and two, it’s Jacob and Anna trying to move on from each other and not being able to. It’s somewhere in between those two, and it’s the grey area that’s devastating. That’s something that I really wanted to convey.
Like Crazy has an ambiguous ending, but is it ambiguous for you?
No, it’s so funny I feel like it’s ambiguous in some ways, and it’s not in other ways. For me, I really wanted the audience to feel exhausted. The relationship has taken such a toll on them emotionally that they have so little left to give. Whether they have nothing left to give and it’s over at that moment, or they will stagger into a sort of half-state of a relationship over the next couple months or a year is really up to the audience. Were you trying to give the audience the power to create their own story after the film finished?
Yeah, I think it’s such a personal story for the audience and for me, that to jam something so conclusive in there would be untrue or manipulative, because I think this movie is what you bring to it from your life. I’ve read some reviews where people just don’t get the film, and it’s just so clear that they’ve never been through anything like this at all. If you have, then you have your own ending, and it wouldn’t be right of me to try and force mine on the audience.”I know in ‘Like Crazy’, they were apart due to the VISA violation, and i know how it’s like when you felt so connected to this one person unlike any other before but it just wasn’t meant to be, but we all know how hard that is for us to accept because there, lies the gray area, and you’ll convince yourself over and over again against your better judgement and you’ll keep on telling yourself that it will work out, you just gotta have the patience while at the same time, you feel exhausted to the very core of your soul. But this thing, it digs at you, it digs into your soul, and it just won’t let go. That feeling makes you feel helpless. Yes, i think the word i was searching for has always been helpless. You don’t want to feel this way, but you KNOW you want to, you have to for reasons that even you can’t understand or wish not to analyze.
On the contrary to many people’s belief, i actually think the ending was perfect. The flashbacks, the point where you realize that it was not the same anymore, it was classic. It makes you plot the rest of the story on your own, and i have done that the second the screen went blank. haha. Anna and Jacob probably felt the awkward indifference between the two of them but they still will themselves to be together because what was the point of it ALL if they weren’t together, and so they’ll convince themselves further that it just takes some time and patience. So they stay together, probably with a certain kind of void inside and a yearning of the mind blowing moments they once had together until one of them reaches their breaking point. And this is where i can’t continue the story anymore because i can’t decide if they will ever get to find a way to be together in a different but yet still amazing way being their changed, grown up selves, or they just come to an agreement that the chemistry has been lost to time and space. After all, the world can’t be seen as just black and white because it is simply more than that. There are stories everywhere written in the hearts of each individual you see walking down the street.
And that’s the real reason why you can’t judge.
Because you don’t know their story and hence you can’t comprehend what they have been through from their eyes, heart, and soul.
